Volunteer

Today’s
youth need a one-on-one relationship with a caring
adult now more than ever. Thousands of youth are dropping
out of school, teen pregnancy is on the rise for the
first time in over a decade, and drug and alcohol
use among teens is increasing. The power of one person
helping one child for one hour a week can make a difference
between those who make it and those who don’t.
CISGC invites you to explore the idea of becoming
a volunteer. Caring adults are an essential aspect
in helping students overcome life challenges and learning
barriers.

Mentoring
|
|
Becoming
a mentor involves developing a supportive relationship with
a student by demonstrating a willingness to share one’s
life experiences through discussions about friends, family,
school, and other various topics. This form of volunteering
is not academically focused. Rather, it is aimed at providing
the student with support and guidance, which they may be
lacking in their home environment. CISGC matches each mentor
with a student based on similar personalities and common
interests. Mentors spend approximately one hour once a week
with their student.

Tutoring
|
|
Becoming
a tutor involves helping a student develop his or her academic
skills. Volunteers assist students who are struggling in
one or more of their core subjects – Math, Science,
Reading, History and English. Tutors spend approximately
one hour once a week working with their student on items
such as homework, class projects, or simply studying for
an upcoming test. CISCG matches each tutor with a student
based on the student’s needs and the tutor’s
abilities.
Communities In Schools hosts volunteer information sessions
several times throughout the year. Please contact your local
CIS office for more information.
