Communities In Schools
of Greenbrier County (CISGC) utilizes and individual
case management approach to work with an identified
at-risk student population.
CISGC staff work with students and their families
on a variety of issues such as academics, truancy,
behavior, self-esteem, cultural awareness, employment,
health and nutrition, conflict resolution, and positive
life influences.
In addition to on-site case management services the
CISGC program provides:

In
School Tutoring
|
|
One of the many
problems facing low-income families is the lack of
reliable transportation. To combat this issue, CISGC
strives to address the needs of students during the
school day. The in school tutoring program pairs community
volunteers with students who are struggling academically.
Tutors spend approximately one hour once a week working
with their student on items such as homework, class
projects, or simply studying for an upcoming test.

Mentoring
Programs
|
|
The CISGC mentoring
program enables students to develop a one-on-one relationship
with a caring adult. The goal of the mentoring program
is to provide students with the support and guidance
that may be lacking in their home environment. CISGC
matches each mentor with a student based on similar
personalities and common interests. Mentors spend
approximately one hour once a week with their student.

Skill-Building
Workshops
|
|
CISGC partners with
other community organizations to bring a variety of
skill-building workshops into the schools. Most recently,
CISGC in partnership with Hospice Care offered a series
of six bereavement workshops to students who had recently
lost a parent, grandparent, sibling, or loved one.

After
School Programming
|
|
In September 2006,
CISGC received a Safe and Drug-Free Communities Grant
through the West Virginia Division of Criminal Justice
Services to aide in the development of an after school
program. The after school program combines physical
activities with a curriculum that promotes skills
for a safe, healthy, drug-free life.
