Our Programs

Established in January 2004,Communities In Schools of Greenbrier County (CISGC), operating under Communities In Schools of Southeast West Virginia (CISSEWV) is a non-profit stay-in-school organization dedicated to moblizing the resources of the community and bring them into the schools to help youth succeed in school and in life.  CISGC utilizes an individual case management approach to work with an identified at-risk student population.

CISGC currently provides education programming to students and their families in the four secondary schools in Greenbrier County assisting in the development of necessary life skills including: academics, truancy, behavior, positive self-esteem, cultural awareness, employment, healthy choices, understanding anger and emotions, conflict resolution, non-violent communication, social and emotional literacy, and personal responsibility.

In School Tutoring

One of the many problems facing low-income families is the lack of reliable transportation. To combat this issue, CISGC strives to address the needs of students during the school day. The in school tutoring program pairs community volunteers with students who are struggling academically. Tutors spend approximately one hour once a week working with their student on items such as homework, class projects, or simply studying for an upcoming test. Visit the ‘How You Can Help’ section to learn how you can become a tutor.

Mentoring Programs

The CISGC mentoring program enables students to develop a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult. The goal of the mentoring program is to provide students with the support and guidance that may be lacking in their home environment. CISGC matches each mentor with a student based on similar personalities and common interests. Mentors spend approximately one hour once a week with their student. Visit the ‘How You Can Help’ section to learn how you can become a mentor.

Question
Skill-Building Workshops
Helping students become prepared for life includes more than obtaining a high school diploma.  It means knowing how to work cooperatively with others, solve problems, and resolve differences in a constructive manner.  CISGC is working with students to help them develop thes skills.  CISGC provides workshops focusing on social and emotional literacy to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  Social and emotional literacy skills are critical for students who will be working in a global economy, requiring them to be able to form relationships, understand and appreciate the perspectives of others, establish and attain goals, identify, solve and understand the impact of their words and actions and begin to recognize that their behavior contributes to the climate of the school.  Students demonstrate understanding of these skills by working together to create bulletin boards, photo-stories and public service announcement videos that emphasize valuing our differences, speaking out against bullying and resolving conflicts without fighting.

After school
After School Programming

In September 2006, CISGC received a Safe and Drug-Free Communities Grant through the West Virginia Division of Criminal Justice Services to aide in the development of an after school program. The after school program combines physical activities with a curriculum that promotes skills for a safe, healthy, drug-free life.

In addition, CISGC and High Rocks Education Corporation are collaborating and organizing the first service learning group in Greenbrier County. The after school program includes CISGC and High Rocks students meeting twice weekly and participating in organized community service. All participants have been trained and participated at The Greenbrier Valley Manor, The Greenbrier Valley Humane Society, and the "No Kill" shelter in Lewisburg. The students involved are learning the importance of community service while learning the skills needed to be successful within a community.
